Sounds like: Metalcore
1. How did you get started with music and how did you develop your sound? Who thought of the name “Without A Hobby” and is there any meaning behind it?
We got started with our music at a young age. Me (Andrew) and Bryant knew each other since Middle School and have been playing since then developing our sound as we grew up along with the other members when they joined.
The person who thought of the name was our past bassist Phil Sandoval. Though Without A Hobby doesn't sound like anything too special it has a deep and personal meaning to each member of the band. We had a band mate named Matt Hobby who was our vocalist back in 2011. He passed away whilst in the band. He had a dream of playing music for a living and we wanted to honor that. That's why we call ourselves Without A Hobby. Though we are without Matt, the name is also are reminder of where we came from and why we are here playing music.
2. What do you want you listeners to take away from your music?
We hope that people see that there's a reason for everything. We write about a whole lot of different stuff, we just hope you take what we write to cause you to think.
3. What can people expect from your upcoming music? How's it different than "God's Machine"?
With our up coming materially we are going to be going for heavier and also a more thrash vibe to it. We are all influenced by bands like Metallica, Megadeth and Slayer and we love the energy it sets off. Our new single "La Muerte Del Diablo" is the tip of the iceberg of what is to come!
4. What can people expect from your live show?
From our live shows you can expect high energy, big bass booms and with the right crowd, some moshing! We are always trying to up our live performance to bring a good show to everyone who comes out!
5. Who are three bands you’d like to tour with?
Three bands we’d like to tour with are Meshuggah, Metallica, and Chelsea Grin.
6. Any crazy show stories?
We were playing at a high school talent show and people started jumping around on stage and unplugged some important things so all there was, was bass and drums for the last part of the song.
7. What’s your take on the current state of metalcore?
If metalcore bands would look up to Breakdown of Sanity and Oceans Ate Alaska (their new stuff) and bands like them, I think we'd see more progression in the metalcore scene right now. Except for a few, it seems they over use a lot of stuff. That's why we are trying to branch off of metalcore a little.
8. What’s the current music scene like there in the North Carolina both locally and state wide?
The music scene in NC is awesome! The local bands are supportive and generally care about other bands which is nice. A scene that is jealous and at each others throat fails.
9. What’s your take on legal/illegal music downloading?
As for illegal downloading I can't say don't do it cause we’ve all done it and that's hypocritical. But if you have money, buy from bands and support the best you can.
10. What’s next for Without A Hobby?
Up next for WOAH is branching out to other places with our music, that means more tours and shows to get us out there!
11. Any shoutouts?
A giant shout out to Shivas Destruction (Band)! Best guys around. A shout out to Deitra Harrison for practice space and food! And lastly for Ryan Reedy. He's recorded all our stuff. Really great guy and amazing musician/producer.
