Sounds like: Metal
This new offering from Minnesota Metal band Discord Curse features 13 tracks, three of which have cameos from genre staples Ben Duerr (Despondent), Don Campan (Waking The Cadaver) and Lucas Mann (Rings Of Saturn). "First Breath" opens up the album with a vicious assault on the senses that brings to mind the unbridled onslaught of early Bring Me The Horizon. It's a short intro track but sets the tone early. "When Skin Separates From Bone" features enough breakdowns and rapid fire drumming to even make the most extreme metal head stand in awe. The track knows how to throw down. "Maggot" ups the ante with an almost Blood Has Been Shed like technicality. The time signatures and overall annihilation make this a track that'll get your adrenaline to the roof. "Titan" has a melodic Metalcore feel to it and brings to mind I Killed The Prom Queen. The track really shines and is a stand out track you don't want to miss. The title track "Reaper" falls into the more Code Orange side of the Metal spectrum. It's a hard as nails track that never lets up. "As The Sun" keeps the pace at a fast clip. The track has clean vocals on the track and really brings back that sound of when Bring Me The Horizon first incorporated cleans into their music. It's still heavy as hell but just with a touch of cleans. It's a lot heavier than the average melodic Metalcore track. "Blundgeoned" blasts in like a shotgun blast to the front door. The track has a ton of depth to it and should be a fan favorite right away. "Time" once again breaks out the clean vocals and has an uplifting sound to go with it. The track still brings all the Metal it can conjure up though as it's fast, heavy and the right amount of melodic. "Snake" has an Industrial/Nine Inch Nails opening before breaking into the explosive Discord Curse sound. The track is a testament to the chaos and devastation of the genre. "Reptile" features Ben Duerr and treads the line of Deathcore. The track turns the album up to 11 with its breakdowns and harsh vocals. "My Everything" is fantastic and just knowing that the band can have a track that changes up the dynamic of the album as much as this track later in the album really showcases the talent of the band perfectly. It's a track that takes its time, reels you in and unleashes fury. "Lies" features Don Campan and draws a lot of influences from Suicide Silence and the Black Dahlia Murder. The track will surely get the live crowd moving. The closing track "Tempus II" features Lucas Mann of Rings Of Saturn and doesn't give you time to breathe as it unleashes hell on the listener. It's a fantastic closer and slams shut one of the hardest hitting albums of this new year.
Verdict:
Discord Curse's new full length album takes a sledgehammer to the current state of Metal/Metalcore.
