1. How did you get started with music and how did you develop your sound? Who thought of the name “Kill No Albatross” and is there any meaning behind it?
Sallas: Crosty and I started playing music together in the sixth grade, jamming death metal, techno, and opera originals in his basement. Our sound developed naturally as we got older, started listening to more music, and endured the hormonal bushfires of puberty. Josh, Liam, and Kyle all bring their own personalities to the KNA material, too, so their influences and experiences play a part in shaping the sound - we write the songs, for the most part, collectively.
Alex: The expression 'Kill No Albatross' comes from Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, and that in turn is an allusion to Coleridge's Rime of the Ancient Mariner. In that poem, the titular mariner crossbows an albatross, which is symbolic for good luck, and thereby curses his ship. For us, then, to kill no albatross is to leave no stone unturned - to not ‘shoot down’ opportunity.
2. What do you want people to take away from your "Lost In Darkness And Distance" EP?
Sallas: I just want people to have a reaction to it, whether that reaction be positive or negative - because there's nothing worse than being unmemorable. I hope that it forms some sort of impression on listeners, and that what they 'take away' is the feeling they get while listening to it.
3. How would you describe your sound to the average listener?
Alex: Bangers and jams.
Sallas: Mash and peanut butter... s.
4. Who are three bands you’d like to tour with?
Sallas: Devin Townsend Project, Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and Buckethead.
Alex: Coheed and Cambria, Action Bronson, and Protest the Hero.
5. What are your three desert island albums that you'd never get tired of listening to?
Alex: Dance Gavin Dance - "Downtown Battle Mountain", Infectious Organisms - "Human Experience", Coheed - "Good Apollo 1".
Sallas: Cusco - Desert Island, Mystic Braves - Desert Island, Gilligan's Island Soundtrack.
6. What’s your take on the current state of Rock?
Alex: Musically, I think it's doing great. Unreal releases this year from Eidola, Mastodon, CHON, and Stolas.
Sallas: They're still pretty hard. I stubbed my toe on one earlier today, and the toe still hurts.
7. What’s the current music scene like there in Canada both locally and country wide?
Sallas: It's hard to say what it's like countrywide, because Canada is pretty big and we've yet to travel all of it. Locally, though, it's pretty good. There are plenty of bands, and plenty of friends and family willing to support them.
8. What’s your take on legal/illegal music downloading?
Alex: While it's true that it takes away from the artist's profit, the music industry needs to adapt and reassess the value of their recorded intellectual property. Spotify and TIDAL have partially rectified this issue, but the main sources of revenue these days come from performances and merch sales.
9. What’s next for Kill No Albatross?
Alex: Got a new release in the works, to be recorded early next year. The main goal is to try and double our average BPM from the last EP.
Sallas: We'll be doing a couple of music videos to accompany the new release, too. Oh, and we'll be on TV - the CHCH morning show - in a week and a half.
