Sounds like: Black Metal
1. How did you get started with music and how did you develop your sound? Who thought of the name “The Ogre" and is there any meaning behind it?
I started a few years ago with my previous band Faces Of Madness, released two albums and with the end of that project surfaced a need to continue to write music. Right away I began looking for musicians to get a new band together but I couldn´t find the right members for it, then it came to a point that I decided to do everything by myself. The style was a natural evolution and influences of bands like Mercyful Fate, Iron Maiden, Carcass, Megadeth and many others. The name The Ogre sounds like my real name and I thought it was iconic and different also it has that raw feel to it.
2. What do you want people to take away from your music?
I always write my albums as something that has an identity, a specific atmosphere. So I want to create a world that the listener can dive in and be a part of each story told.
3. How would you describe your sound to the average listener?
Heavy, fast, frenetic and ominous.
4. Who are three bands you’d like to tour with?
Carcass, Iron Maiden and Megadeth.
5. How has Covid affected what you do as a band?
When the pandemic hit I was already talking to promoters and tour managers no get a small tour going for my previous album (Entity). Everything closed down so I decided to keep working on the next one that became Aeon Zero.
6. What’s your take on the current state of Black Metal?
I really don´t like to separate the subgenres of metal, I feel everyone is in the same situation and I don´t think The Ogre can be defined simply by "Black Metal". Every listener defines The Ogre differently, some call it black metal, others death metal, progressive thrash black, you name it. But to get back to the question, metal in general has become a real fkn circus. You have thousands of bands trying some gimmick to get themselves seen, you have masks, hoods, a million types of facepaint, candles, smoke whatever eye candy they can throw in there, and what really matters, THE MUSIC, is left aside being a rehash of everything we´ve heard before. Only a handfull of bands really try do something interesting nowadays.
7. What’s the current music scene like there in Brazil?
I´ve been apart from the scene for a while now, I got bored with brazilian bands to be honest. The only band that I like here is Krisiun, the rest are just copies of every band we´ve seen before.
8. What’s your take on the royalties that streaming services pay out to artists?
Well, I doubt anyone is getting rich with those cents we get from every play. But at least anyone can put their songs out there to be heard, and I find that awesome.
9. What’s next for The Ogre?
At the moment I want to focus on really promote Aeon Zero, I´m auditioning some guys to try to get a few gigs to have some live feedback and material for a future live album but I never stop writing and recording, I have a few new songs done but I haven´t decided if I´ll go with a new album or an EP in the next couple of years, let´s wait and see.
