Sounds like: Synth Rock
1. How did you get started with music and how did you develop your sound? Who thought of the name “Cedars" and is there any meaning behind it?
We’ve all been playing music since we were very young. We often say it’s saved our lives more than once. Music has always been a safe haven and a way to talk about the hard things even when you don’t have words. I think all of that goes into our collective sound. Everyone brings who they are to the table and we make room. Collectively, we all cut our musical teeth on grunge, punk, post punk and metal. (Add some shoegaze and industrial and viola.)
2. What do you want people to take away from your music?
Honestly, that you are 100% perfect just as you are. We really believe the world needs all of us to show up as our most authentic selves. That echoes out in amazing ways and gives others around you permission to do the same.
3. How would you describe your sound to the average listener?
Someone told us once that we sounded “like Florence and the Machine and Nine Inch Nails had a baby.” We’ll take it.
4. Who are three bands you’d like to tour with?
PJ Harvey, Foo Fighters, and Chelsea Wolfe.
5. How has Covid affected what you do as a band>
We’ve been really digging in to writing. We released a full length album, Cowards, and we feel it was because we had the time and space to finish it up. We couldn’t tour so we got it done. We’ve also been working on making more music videos, and that has been really rewarding.
6. What’s your take on the current state of Synth Rock?
Our take? We’ll take it!
7. What’s the current music scene like there in Texas?
It’s varied. We tend to play further from our home base, but no matter where we go, Texans do love their live music. We all agree on that at least.
8. What’s your take on the royalties that streaming services pay out to artists?
Are we allowed to curse in this interview?
9. What’s next for Cedars?
We just released Cowards this June, and we’re already back in the studio working on the next album. We have a new video that was just released, Claymore, and are in production on a couple more.( You can watch all of our videos on YouTube.) We hope to be playing more live shows when things are safer for all and we should be in Europe by next summer playing some festivals and other dates.
10. Any shoutouts?
We’re eternally grateful to everyone connected to our community. We couldn’t do what we do without the help of partners, spouses and friends. And HUGE thanks to all the people in high school who were mean to us…you gave us lots to write about and we got stronger, sexier and more creative because of you. Cheers!
