From: North Carolina
Sounds like: Progressive Metal
1. How did you get started with music and how did you develop your sound? Who thought of the name “Void Mother" and is there any meaning behind it?
I got started with music about 12 years ago when my grandparents bought me my first guitar. I quickly became obsessed with composing music and I’ve been trying to hone my sound ever since. My biggest influences in metal are Ne Obliviscaris, Opeth, Cynic and Nevermore as you can probably tell from the music. Ne Obliviscaris in particular inspired to me to heavily incorporate violins in my songs and Warrel Dane’s theatrical vocal style is something that I’m always trying to mimic. Outside of metal, I’m inspired by artists like Hans Zimmer, Steven Wilson, The Midnight, Plini..etc, particularly those that like to experiment and are masters at writing great melodies.
When I came up with the name ‘Void Mother’ I was essentially thinking of a person that creates loneliness. I guess I was thinking of myself because I have a tendency to live in my head and create my own void even when I’m surrounded by people LOL.
2. What do you want people to take away from your music?
Enjoyment. I hope I’m invoking some sort of emotion when people listen to my music.
3. How would you describe your sound to the average listener?
Heavy riffs mixed with Nevermore-style vocals, piano and violin. I’d say if you like Ne Obliviscaris, then there’s a good chance you might like Void Mother.
4. Who are three bands you’d like to tour with?
Ne Obliviscaris, Opeth and Cynic.
5. How has Covid affected what you do as a band?
It has had zero impact since I collaborate with artists remotely.
6. What’s your take on the current state of Metal?
There’s been a lot of amazing bands that have come up in the past decade so I think it’s headed in a good direction.
7. What’s the current music scene like locally there in North Carolina?
Cities like Charlotte and Raleigh appear to have a good scene going on. My favorite bands from North Carolina would probably be Between the Buried and Me and Aether Realm.
8. What’s your take on the royalties that streaming services pay out to artists?
I’d love it if they paid more of course LOL. At this point, I consider streaming services more of a tool for exposure rather than a stream of income.
9. What’s next for Void Mother?
New single coming out in April! After that, more music and I’d like to eventually get permanent members in the band and start touring.
10. Any shoutouts?
I’d like to shoutout Arran McSporran’s band ‘Utopia’. Their album ‘Stalker’ is probably my favorite release of 2021. You can listen to it here: https://linktr.ee/utopiaband
