1. How did you get started with music and how did you develop your sound? How did the name "The Unfinished" come about and is there any meaning to it?
Jeff (drums) and Jon (bass) are the OG members of the band. Our sound has evolved over time, and the music we’re making now truly reflects who we are both individually and as a band. With Abigail (vocals) and Cory (guitar) added to the mix, we’re more motivated than ever to see how far we can go.
The name “The Unfinished” came about early in the band’s history. Initially, it was because we rehearsed in an unfinished basement. On a deeper level, it represents our belief that we, as individuals, are always evolving and improving. We are constantly unfinished, always striving to become better versions of ourselves.
2. What do you want people to take away from your music?
We want our listeners to truly enjoy the energy and passion we put into every track. Beyond that, we hope our music inspires people, fostering a sense of solidarity and inclusivity. We want everyone to feel like they belong and are part of something bigger when they listen to our music.
3. How would you describe your sound to the average listener?
Our sound is a blend of nostalgic and fresh elements, influenced by classic punk and hardcore bands from the late '70s and early '80s. Our lyrics address personal struggles and social issues, resonating with fans who seek authenticity and passion.
4. Who are three bands you’d like to tour with?
You asked for three, but we’re giving you four! We’d love to tour with X, Rancid, The Interrupters, and Descendents. These bands have been huge influences on us, and sharing the stage with them would be an incredible experience.
5. What's your thoughts on AI generated music?
The easy answer is that it sucks, but like everything, there are pros and cons. On the positive side, it can be a valuable resource for musicians with disabilities, providing tools that make music creation more accessible. However, the downsides are the obvious lack of creative freedom and a diminished sense of authenticity.
6. What’s your take on the current state of Punk Rock?
The current state of punk rock is a mixed bag. On one hand, it’s great to see well-known bands gaining wider recognition, but playing non-punk venues can sometimes dilute the authentic punk rock vibe. At the local level, though, the scene is thriving with multiple generations drawing inspiration from each other, keeping the true spirit of punk alive.
7. What’s the current music scene like there in Missouri?
Here in Kansas City, the music scene is vibrant and diverse. We have fantastic bands across various genres and some great venues that really support live music. It’s a great place for musicians and fans alike.
8. What’s your take on the royalties that streaming services pay out to artists?
The royalties that streaming services pay out to artists is disappointing. There’s a strong need for these payouts to be increased to fairly compensate musicians for their work.
9. What’s next for The Unfinished?
We’re excited about what’s ahead for The Unfinished! We’re planning to play at new venues, continue writing new material, and get back into the studio for more recording. It’s all about writing, recording, and ripping it up on stage!
